I had the fortune to visit the Island of Hawaii when coronavirus restrictions lifted for a short bit. I have an affinity for the Hawaiian islands and was over-the-moon happy to have the chance to go. The tranquility of nature there feeds my soul and when I go I always find something new to discover. On my most recent trip, I stumbled upon a tropical fruit stand in the middle of a heavy tropical downpour. I of course stopped because I cannot resist buying fresh from the source. (I would liken it to corn. Freshly picked corn from the farm has a distinctly different taste and texture than trucked into a grocery store.) The stand had all sorts of things to try but this time I stuck to one; Guanabana also known as Soursop. It is one of those fruits that should be very ripe to get the full flavor profile. My assessment? It had sort of a chalky mouthfeel and is sweet but not overly sweet. If you google it people say it tastes like guava and pineapple mixed. I wouldn’t disagree but think the flavor is sort of its own standalone flavor. The real question though is did I like it enough to eat it again? Yes, absolutely.
