Globe Radishes

Easter Egg Radishes are a colorful vegetable that you often see at Farmer’s Markets. I enjoy growing those globe-shaped beauties myself because they are fast growers in the spring. (The photo above is my latest harvest for reference.) Radishes are vegetables that have many different varieties and are used in different cuisines. Here in the US though I think it is unusual to see the globe-shaped ones outside of a few slices on a salad. Restaurants in the US feature them most often as microgreens, sushi radish (Daikon), or kimchi. When I travel to areas of German-speaking countries it’s very common to have fresh grated red or purple radish in a vinegar dressing as part of a salad plate. Why haven’t I seen that here in the US I wonder? My dad grew radishes when I was a child but I only recall eating them raw sprinkled with salt. My hunt continues and I look forward to the day when a spot them on a US (or Canadian) menu. Yum!
